When to use this page

Use the share odds calculator when you need to check whether a chosen share difficulty produces a sensible flow of accepted shares for your hashrate.

If expected share time is too short, you may be submitting more shares than necessary. If it is too long, feedback becomes sparse. The difficulty calculator solves that relationship in reverse.

For block-level probability, switch to the mining calculator. For rented hashrate scenarios, use the hashrate rental calculator.

Frequently asked questions

What does median share time mean, and why is it different from expected share time?

Expected share time is the long-run average. Median share time is the point at which half of all shares arrive sooner and half arrive later. Because share timing follows an exponential distribution, the median is shorter than the average, about 69% of it.

Why did I not get a share exactly at the expected time?

Share arrival is random and memoryless. Individual shares can arrive much sooner or much later than the expected time; only the average across many shares converges toward that number.

How is this different from the difficulty calculator?

The difficulty calculator solves for a difficulty target given a desired share interval. This page goes the other direction: given hashrate and a chosen difficulty, it calculates the resulting expected share time and probability windows.
